✨ Fun Stories

Between the giant free-to-play shooters and the endless mobile time-wasters, there’s a small, calm corner of the browser game world where the goal is simply to finish a picture. No loot boxes. No leaderboard. Just you and some pixels.

Coloring Squared Play is that corner. It’s a free site of browser-based pixel-art games built around two ideas: math coloring and jigsaw puzzles. Both run in the browser and, according to the site, work on Chromebooks, tablets and phones.

Solve and fill

The math coloring games work like the printable pages from its sister site, Coloring Squared, but on screen. A hidden picture waits under a grid of problems, and you solve each one to fill in a square and gradually uncover the image. Topics include addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, place value, fractions and basic geometry.

The themes are pitched at things kids already play and watch: Minecraft, Pokémon, Star Wars, Nintendo, superheroes, Disney and animals, plus holiday editions that appear as the calendar turns. It’s math, but with a costume.

Jigsaws with a retro look

The other half of the site is jigsaw puzzles made from pixel art. You drag retro-style pieces and snap them into place, which is relaxing in the way all good jigsaws are, with the added charm of a chunky, game-console look and no piece that has somehow fallen under the couch.

Where it fits

The site is aimed at kids, teachers and families. For teachers, it’s a handy center, station or fast-finisher activity: something a student can start with minimal instruction and finish with a small sense of accomplishment. For families, it’s a gentle way to turn screen time into practice, without the usual argument.

It’s a good reminder that a game doesn’t have to shout to be fun, and that a finished picture is its own kind of reward. Which is, when you think about it, the whole point of a jigsaw. And also, honestly, of math.

Disclosure: ADK Content’s publisher also runs Coloring Squared Play. We tried to describe it the way we’d describe anyone else’s site, with fewer adjectives than we’d like.
