October is crowded, and your free time is not infinite. Here are the PC releases worth putting on your radar, in date order, so you can plan your excuses.
The first week
October 6 â Gears of War: E-Day. The Xbox prequel arrives on Steam as well as Xbox, to strong review scores. October 6 â Star Wars: Galactic Racer. A sci-fi racer with a run-based structure, in the spirit of 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I Racer and F-Zero, which means someone is about to have strong feelings about podracing again.
The second week
October 9 â Car Park Capital. A satirical city builder where you replace walkable neighborhoods with parking garages, which is exactly as unhinged as it sounds and will probably be extremely relatable to anyone who has tried to park downtown. October 13 â Valor Mortis. A first-person Soulslike set during a supernatural version of the Napoleonic wars, from the creators of Ghostrunner. October 13 â Planet Zoo 2. The sequel to the zoo-management hit, for people who like animals and spreadsheets. October 13 â Total War: Shogun 2 â Complete Edition. A complete edition of the 2011 strategy favorite.
Mid-month
October 14 â Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2. The sequel to the retro-styled shooter, which means more very large men and very large guns. October 15 â Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. A new Castlevania entry, which will be watched closely by fans of the classic series and answered with either tears of joy or a very polite email.
The final stretch
October 22 â Final Fantasy Resonance. A new Final Fantasy title, because they don’t stop. October 23 â Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The annual shooter, this year coming to PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2. October 29 â Phantom Blade Zero. A stylish new action game that arrives just in time to ruin your Halloween plans.
A caution about dates
Release dates move. Treat this as a snapshot, and check the store page before you clear your weekend. If you only have time for a few, the Gears prequel, Valor Mortis and the Castlevania entry are a good spread of genres, and a reasonable ask of your free time.
