Square Enix is giving Final Fantasy the HD-2D treatment, which is gaming shorthand for “pixel art that’s been to a very nice spa.”

Date, platforms and price

Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. The standard edition costs $49.99. The Digital Deluxe Edition is $59.99 and adds in-game items, and the Collector’s Edition is $209.99 and includes physical extras like an artbook, a soundtrack and a Final Fantasy trading card game promo card.

Square Enix is the publisher, with development by Lancarse.

What it is

This is the first HD-2D Final Fantasy game, which means retro-inspired pixel-art visuals with modern lighting and depth. According to reports, the story is based on the first arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, centered on crystals, with characters that include Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. In other words, it’s a greatest-hits crossover with the emotional range of a family reunion.

How it plays

The battle system is turn-based, with what Square Enix describes as a modern twist. Chocobos, espers and airships return, which covers the Final Fantasy bingo card. The game was rebuilt as a console-quality RPG rather than a direct port of the mobile original, and more details are promised later.

Who it’s for

If you like the look of the Octopath Traveler era, or you’ve been waiting for Final Fantasy to go back to its pixel-art roots, this is aimed squarely at you. If you’re one of the people who just wants a Chocobo, you’re also welcome.

Details are based on publisher announcements as reported at the time of writing and may change.
